Online interviews have become the standard for remote hiring — and they come with their own unique challenges. A shaky connection, poor lighting, or a cluttered background can undermine an otherwise excellent candidate. At the same time, a well-prepared online interview can actually work in your favour — you are in your own space, with your notes nearby, in an environment you control.

Here is everything you need to know to nail your next online interview.

1. Test Your Tech at Least 24 Hours Before

Nothing derails an online interview faster than technical problems. Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection well before the interview. Join a test call on Zoom, Google Meet, or whichever platform is being used. Make sure your audio is clear and your video is stable.

  • Use a wired internet connection if possible — WiFi can drop at the wrong moment
  • Close all unnecessary tabs and apps to free up bandwidth
  • Have a backup plan — know your interviewer's email in case of technical failure
  • Charge your laptop fully or keep it plugged in

2. Set Up Your Background and Lighting

Your background says a lot about you. Choose a clean, neutral background — a plain wall, a tidy bookshelf, or a professional virtual background. Avoid busy, distracting, or messy backgrounds.

Lighting is equally important. Sit facing a window or a light source so your face is well-lit. Avoid sitting with a bright light or window behind you — this makes you look like a silhouette and is surprisingly common in online interviews.

3. Dress Professionally — Fully

Yes, that means wearing proper trousers or a skirt too — not just a smart top. You never know when you might need to stand up during the call. Dressing fully also puts you in the right mindset. It signals to your brain that this is a professional situation and helps you perform at your best.

Pre-Interview Checklist

  • Camera and microphone tested and working
  • Stable internet connection confirmed
  • Clean, professional background set up
  • Good lighting in front of you
  • Fully dressed professionally
  • Notes and CV printed or on a second screen
  • Glass of water nearby
  • Phone on silent
  • Pets and family members informed
  • Logged into the platform 5 minutes early

4. Prepare Your Answers in Advance

Research the company thoroughly before the interview. Understand what they do, who their customers are, and what their values are. Prepare answers to common questions using the STAR method — Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Have 2-3 specific examples ready from your experience that demonstrate your key skills. Write them down and practise saying them out loud before the interview.

5. Make Eye Contact With the Camera

This is one of the most overlooked tips for online interviews. Looking at the interviewer on your screen feels natural, but it actually makes it look like you are looking downward. Look directly at your camera lens when speaking — this creates the impression of eye contact for the interviewer.

💡 Tip: Place a small sticker or arrow next to your camera as a reminder to look there when you are talking.

6. Prepare Questions to Ask

Always have 3-4 questions ready to ask at the end. This shows genuine interest in the role and the company. Good questions to ask include: What does success look like in this role after 90 days? What is the team culture like? What are the biggest challenges someone in this position typically faces?
